European Championships Finals
The European Team Championship Finals have been played last weekend just outside Barcelona, Spain.
Anna Brazhnikova was there with her fellow Swedish team mates Hilda Melander and Valeria Osadchenko.
Sweden had qualified to the European Finals after passing the Group Stages in August in Italy. Anna Brazhnikova was instrumental in their success.
This week Anna and her team mates were up against no.2 seed Spain in the first round. If Sweden beat Spain they would probably meet Portugal in the next round and having a good chance of reaching the final.
Hilda Melander was seeded #2 but unfortunately lost to Lara Arruaurrena in the singles. Anna was seeded #1 and therefore was going to play against Spain´s top seeded player Theresa Maria Torro. Anna, who still felt the pain from her abdominal muscle lost the first set 2-6. It took a while for Anna to get her game going and she had to prevent two matchpoints from her Spanish opponent. Eventually Anna regained her concentration and won the second set 7-5. Third set Anna had to deliver and moved up the momentum and won the match 6-2. Final score 2-6 7-5 6-2.
The score was 1-1 and the doubles was up next. Anna who did not feel 100% after the match had to pass on playing the doubles.
Melander and Osadchenko then had to win the decisive match against Torro and Arruabarrena. Unfortunately Sweden lost that match (2-6 5-7) and had to play against Bulgaria for consolation positions 5th and 6th.
Anna was cautious and passed on further play and Sweden finished 6th position. More information is available at the Tennis Europe website.
