Anna is back from Africa

Anna Brazhnikova is back in Sweden after two weeks in Lagos, Nigeria, where she played two $25,000 ITF Pro Circuit tournaments - The Govenors Cup Lagos 2009.
Anna, who favours the hard court surface had prepared back in Stockholm the previous weeks. So far this year Anna has played mostly ITF Pro Circuit tournaments and has improved her world ranking from 1037 (end of 2008 season) to her current ranking of 504. 

In the first tournament, Anna faced 26 year-old Chinese player Chun-Yan He in the first round. Anna won 1-6 6-3 6-4 against the left-handed He. Next up was Katarina Kachlikova from Slovakia and Anna started the match in a good manner by winning the first set 6-2. Unfortunately, the 24 year-old Kachlikova who had been ranked 217 in the world (2005), turned the match around and won the the remaining sets 6-1 6-1.

Katarina KACHLIKOVA (SVK) defeated Anna BRAZHNIKOVA (SWE) (6) 2-6 6-1 6-1

The outcome in the doubles was better for Anna this week where she reached the final with Russian partner Anastasia Mukhametova. Beating Kachlikova and number one seed Zuzana Kukova in the quarterfinal. The doubles final against Russian player Bratchikova and Greek player Gerasimou was a close encounter with two tie breaks but Anna and her partner lost the match 7-6(3) 7-6(1).

BRATCHIKOVA (RUS) / GERASIMOU (GRE) (2) defeated BRAZHNIKOVA (SWE) / MUKHAMETOVA (RUS) 7-6(3) 7-6(1)

In the second week, Anna had improved her form and adjusted to the humid climate and won her first two matches in good form. First against Israeli player Ester Masuri (6-0 4-6 6-1) and in the second round 6-3 6-1 against Philadelphia based player Alexandra Riley. In the quarterfinal Anna faced the number one seed Zuzana Kucova from the Slovak Republic and the first set included many break points that Anna was not able to capitalize on but Zucova showed some stable game from the base line, hence winning the set 6-1. The second set started out differently, Anna winning the first three games and challenging the #150 ranked Slovakian player. Unfortunately, some close mistakes from Anna and solid play from Zucova meant that the 27 year-old player won the second set 7-5.
